Abstract:Classical Chinese poetry has been translated into European languages for more than 400 years, but the research at home and abroad is relatively lagging behind. This study adopts the methods of big data retrieval and historical documents to examine the translation, English retranslation, dissemination and influence of an? cient Chinese poetry in Europe from the late 16th century to the end of the 18th century. It is found that, during this period, the dissemination of Chinese classical poetry in Europe presents itself in four forms: the translation of“Four Books”and“Five Classics”, the translation and citation in the Sinological writings of early European scholars, the translation and retranslation of the Classic of Poetry, and the translation and retranslation of other classical Chinese poetry. It is in these forms that classical Chinese poetry is first spread and generates a wide range of influence in Europe in earlier times.
