Abstract:This study aims at examining the effect of recasts and the Ideal L2 Self on target-language development. 28 1st-year non-English majors participated in the study. The subjects were divided into four groups based on their responses to a questionnaire measuring“the Ideal L2 Self”:high-motivation group in which learners received recasts,low-motivation group in which learners received recasts,high-motivation group in which learners received no recasts and low motivation group where learners received no recasts. Each group consisted of 7 students. In the three treatment sessions, each participant had a dyadic oral interaction with the researcher. When the subjects produced incorrect question forms, whereas those in the two recast groups received recasts, those in the control groups did not. Results indicated that the number of the higher level question forms produced by the recast groups was larger than the one produced by the control groups, but no significant effect was found between recasts, learners’Ideal L2 Self and the devel- opment of question forms.
