Abstract:The interpretation of Dark Night in Japanese academic shows a tendency of dualism: on the one hand, interpreting the word from the perspective of social criticism; on the other hand, interpreting the description of the conflict between the female characters and the reality as the epoch-making novelty. The author holds that either of the interpretations is one-sided, Dark Night is developed in the intersection of politics and social gender. Based on this view, this paper will reinterpret Dark Night to discover the Japanese political and cultural order after the Meiji. Then, as a contrast, it explores the historical fact that the national defense movie in the 1940s Mulan's Enlistment was reused by the Japanese, revealing its political and cultural connotation. Through the comparison of literary performance and historical events, the political and cultural images of modern Japan are objectively analyzed.
