Abstract:Although the number of animated movies with the theme of“Journey to the West”in recent ten years is relatively large, only the“Return of the Great Sage”has won a success office and reputation. Other animated movies have a negligible response, not to mention the comparison with Disney, DreamWorks and Pixar Company. In order to explore the reasons, this paper mainly analyses the current situations and problems of adaptation and dissemination of animated films in China from three aspects: first, the exploration of“Monkey King”animation in China is facing some new problems in maintaining national characteristics while making cross-cultural attempts; second, the re-coding of China’s animations about“Journey to the West”in the past ten years includes subversive rewriting, the modern rewriting of heroic characters, the confirmation of self-subject consciousness and the pursuit of self-identity in the context of modern age. At the same time, it also faces the problems of lowjuvenile and game-oriented; third, as a symbolic metaphor of“national allegory”, the animated films of the Westward Journey, as a social mirror, are important strategies for the aesthetic expression of ideological discourse and image dissemination in different times.
